Lunar New Year: The Year of the Snake

Happy Lunar New Year! For some reason, this year more than any other, the Lunar New Year and Year of the Snake has come up in conversation much more than any other year for me. This got me thinking more deeply about the Year of the Snake and the themes that come with it. Of course, with any new year there are thoughts of changes, new beginnings and renewal. The Year of the Snake specifically focuses on a shedding of "bad energy" to bring about transformation. This bad energy could be external, like a time to end toxic relationships, leave jobs that make you miserable, or remove yourself from places or spaces that make you unwell (physically or mentally). Or it could be a time for an internal shedding, such as ending "bad" habits that are harmful to you, or doing the tough inner work that allows you to release the patterns of behavior that are keeping you stuck.

The main point is that this is a time to let go of what you need to release in order to allow room for new growth.

If you, like many of us currently, are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, frustrated, angry and sad, I imagine the idea of "self work" might sound wholly beyond what you're capable of right now. Or even interested in, because maybe you are so outwardly focused right now that all you are thinking about is how you can resist or "fight back" against the avalanche of harm in the world. Likely, if this is you, you are hunkering down and holding on tight to what you know in a state of semi-survival.

So, let's begin at the begin. This is not a frantic, "burn it all down!" approach to releasing. You don't need to trash every relationship that feels less than great, immediately quit your job, or drop out of Book Club. This is a gradual, slow, careful shedding as you come into your own. And to do that, we need to start with you.

This is a time for self-reflection, and a time to recognize how far you've come already. This is a time to care for yourself, radically.

BECAUSE:

A. You are worth it

B. You cannot know what you need to release and what might be keeping you stuck if you are in a constant state of panic, fear, sadness or frenzy. You need to start by getting yourself centered and right. This does not mean don't feel those things, it just means if that's your everyday normal, you need to double down on caring for yourself FIRST. I mean, before everyone else around you. As much as possible.

C. Do not underestimate how powerful you are and how powerful starting with yourself can be. Just imagine the ripple effects.

D. You are worth it

Not sure where to start? Read my post from last November for some self-care tips.

Cheers to new beginnings, releasing that which we no longer need, and a coming into our own.

With peace,

Angelica
